Material Transfer Agreement (MTA)

The Material Transfer Agreement (MTA) governs the transfer of tangible research materials between organizations

There are two different types of MTAs based on the direction of the material transfer. In one case the University of Debrecen is the recipient party and in the other case material possessed by the university is being transferred to an external partner.

Conditions included in the Material Transfer Agreement may be essential in regards to further commercialization of research results so thorough investigation of contents is strongly advised for the recipient party before signing the agreement. On the other hand if a researcher sends out research material under MTA, they will have a greater impact on the hird party utilization of the research material and also all results reached by other researchers via utilizing his material will be accessible.

Researchers shall contact Tamás Bene via the e-mail address regarding MTA related requests attaching the agreement layout. If the university is the sender party in the transaction it is necessary to fill in the questionnaire you can download from here in order to prepare the agreement.

Process of preparing and signing the Material Transfer Agreement

  • The researcher sends the agreement layout received from the partner or the completed questionnaire to the e-mail address
  • TTO registers agreement initiative
  • If the agreement contains financial obligations, the researcher initiates material acquisition towards General Directorate of Finance by placing an order.
  • TTO experts/prepares agreement when needed and negotiates with partner. TTO represents the interests of the university and the researchers in a way that the agreement is advantageous for both parties.
  • MTA approved by both parties is ratified
  • MTA is signed by the head of TTO on behalf of the university based on rector authorization. Other signatories are the head of institute unit and the leader of the research project

Ordering the following in MTA is highly recommended

  • exact purpose of the recipient regarding the research material, probably by attaching research plan;
  • planned future of intellectual property rights related to the research;
  • confidentiality rules;
  • conditions of publishing research results reached via utilizing the material;
  • limitations related to research material.
